Creating, On My Own Time

Around here, we value the collaborative energy that comes from focused logic and out-there creativity. The Business Council for the Arts (BCA) gets that connection, also. Its regional employee art exhibition program, On My Own Time, encourages businesses to get involved in the arts and is a great way for employees to express their creativity.

Businesses of all sizes and kinds (including nimble interactive shops) sponsor a juried art exhibition for their employees, with company-level winners moving on to the annual regional exhibit at NorthPark Center. It’s an opportunity to be able to display our best in the retail center known for featuring artists such as di Suvero, Oldenburg and Warhol.

For some of us, this is the prime chance to let our coworkers – and potentially all of DFW Metroplex – see the creative genius who resides inside the professional-corporate shell. Everyone who participates gets the chance to flex the right side of his or her brain, and create a forum to express his or her thoughts. The conversations in the break room will be infinitely more interesting, and your boss might reconsider that promotion.

For us, it’s also a part of our tradition of giving back to the communities we serve. Imaginuity Interactive is partnering with BCA to improve its digital presence in 2011, and well as sponsoring our first On My Own Time exhibit in our work space. We even invited our friends at The Dealey Group to participate.

Not to brag too much, but we’re also a two-time winner of the Obelisk Award from the BCA. To quote the group, “The Obelisk Award publicly recognizes and honor businesses and business leaders in North Texas whose support makes a significant impact on the region’s arts and cultural growth.” [End of shameless self-promotion. Thank you for understanding.]

For 2011, the individual juried exhibitions at North Texas businesses take place July 25 through August 13. Make a note in your PDA or smartphone calendar to attend the regional winners’ exhibition at NorthPark, from mid September through early October.
